Hula’s Island Grill is a throwback to the popular tiki restaurants and bars of the ‘50’s & 60’s. The creation of the Delaney brothers, the original location in Monterey opened in 1998, followed by Hula’s Santa Cruz in 2006.
Upon entering, you are greeted by the island décor, eclectic music, and a smiling staff. The vibe is California casual. The atmosphere is always happy. Come be surrounded by hipsters, oldsters, youngsters, and everyone in between. You can enjoy a tropical cocktail, a quick bite, or a full dinner, while being taken care of by the best staff in the ‘biz. Our menu has something for everyone, and is a fusion of island, and American flavors.
Hula’s mission is to create a community gathering spot for local residents, as well as that special place to invoke great memories, for diners from shores afar. Try us once, you’ll be hooked!

Love the fruity cocktails but they are dangerous. Just wait until you stand up! The food is always good and you can't beat the Tuesday all night happy hour!

Disappointed that I had only spent one night in Monterey and only had one change to eat here… I totally loved this place and so did my wife. Great value and fantastic food and cocktails. Hawaiian Jerk Chicken melted in my mouth and the flavors hit me in the face like a big left hook. Duke's Luau Pork was the jab cross that followed…WOW…Even the Potted Chocolate Brownie dessert was a simple, flavorsome hit (leave some room, this is big)… I couldn't wait to get to Hawaii and eat some more of this cuisine… Am still in Hawaii and have been able to find anything that comes close. I really miss Hula's Island Grill. Good food, decor and very well priced.
Came in for fish, ordered the jerk pork and I'm glad I did. Best meal we had in Monterey. Wife had luau pork, excellent.

After a long day of visiting the 17 Mile Drive and Carmel Beach, I took my boyfriend here and we both loved our experience at Hula's. Since we already had a picnic at the beach earlier, we weren't hungry hungry hippos, so we just shared the Duke's Luau Pork Plate and the Island Style Poke. I wish we hadn't shared because the food was bomb dot com and I was trying to savor my share of it. The Lilikoi margarita was delicious and not too strong for my lightweight drinker self. Service, ambiance, and food were on point. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Monterey!

This is the best place to eat on the Peninsula, hands-down. The are currently making renovations to enhance the overall experience for their customers. The drinks are outstandingly good, and the staff bends over backwards to make your time and money well-spent. One of the best things about Hula's is that they are constantly adding to their menu, and everything is high-quality. There's a vegetarian menu with a lot of options. The owner, Craig, really takes pride in his business and it shows. His staff follow suit. I've moved away from Monterey, but the second I move back the first place I'm visiting is Hula's. It's that good. Go, you won't be disappointed.
